COP 28: Time to End the Fossil Fuel Era

The priority for COP 28: A global agreement to phase out all fossil fuels. Fast, fairly, and fully funded.

SHARE

The science is clear: Our window to get on track to true net zero and prevent a future of runaway climate change is closing – fast.

The UN's COP 28 climate summit is an opportunity to mobilize the international community to act. But thanks to the fossil fuel industry, the most critical step we can take isn't even on the agenda.

A global agreement to phase out all fossil fuels. Fast, fairly, and fully funded.

At The Climate Reality Project, we're working to change that.

We're working with our 11 branches, millions of supporters, and partners worldwide to push for three priorities that can help us leave fossil fuels behind and get on the road to a better net zero future.

Reduce Emissions

The only way to stop rising temperatures is to slash emissions and rapidly transition away from oil, coal, and gas. That's why we're calling for an agreement to:

  • Phase out all fossil fuels and fossil fuel subsidies.
  • Triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
  • Double energy efficiency by 2030.
  • Fossil fuel production methane emissions at near zero by 2030.

Increase climate finance substantially

Developing nations are ready to do their part to fight climate change. It's time for the wealthy countries responsible for much of the global emissions to do theirs and provide the long promised finance and fair credit terms these nations need to join the clean energy revolution and rebuild after climate disasters. At COP 28, Global North countries must agree to:

  • Deliver on prior commitments too.
  • Provide full funding for Global South countries to create thriving clean energy economies and address climate impacts

Reform future COP processes

For years, fossil lobbyists and petrostates have used the COP process to slow and even halt the global energy transition we need to stop rising temperatures and reach net zero. It's time for a new process. We're working to reform the COP process to:

  • Ensure fossil fuel interests can't block progress on Paris Agreement goals.

Take Action
