The Climate Reality Project Releases New Handbook on Carbon Pricing

SHARE

Today The Climate Reality Project released the  2017 Handbook on Carbon Pricing Instruments, a practical guide for policymakers and stakeholders working on market solutions to the climate crisis. Climate Reality unveiled the handbook at a panel discussion with leading experts on the issue, who discussed the viability of carbon pricing in the United States and around the world, highlighting the ways in which sound carbon pricing instruments can drive and incentivize the mitigation of harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Though the Trump Administration has taken steps to remove carbon pricing considerations from federal agencies, economists and policy experts in both parties agree that putting a market price on carbon pollution is the most effective and economically viable path to combatting the climate crisis. Earlier this year, prominent conservatives – former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, former Secretary of State George P. Shultz, and former Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. – proposed a carbon tax to President Trump.

The Climate Reality Project and its chairman, former Vice President Al Gore, have worked for years to build support for implementing carbon pricing mechanisms on a global scale. The handbook was developed with input from both domestic and international stakeholders and offers an in-depth, practical analysis of pricing mechanisms, design considerations, and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

“The climate crisis is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced, and it is important we utilize the power of economic markets to reduce emissions,” said Ken Berlin, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project. “We’re very proud to introduce the 2017 Handbook on Carbon Pricing Instruments and hope it will be an educational and useful resource in the continuing conversation about the true costs of carbon.”

Panelists at today’s event included: Ken Berlin, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project; George Frampton, co-founder, Partnership for Responsible Growth; Helen Mountford, director of economics at WRI and program director for the New Climate Economy (NCE) initiative; and Alison Cassady, director of domestic energy policy at Center for American Progress.
