COP 31 Is Here

Running November 9–20 in Antalya, Türkiye, the UN’s COP 31 climate summit brings nearly 200 nations together to collaborate on solutions to the climate crisis transforming the planet.

Against a backdrop of the global energy crisis triggered by war in the Middle East and rising cost of living concerns worldwide, this year’s conference offers a chance for progress in three key areas.

Dear Mayors: Bring Cheap Clean Energy to Your Community

It’s time to send a message to our mayors and city leaders: Bring cheap clean energy to our towns and cities.

Take Action

Our Priorities for COP 31

branch leaders at cop29

1 Practical plans to replace fossil fuels with clean energy:

Nations have pledged to cut climate-changing emissions. Now it’s time to turn their commitments into action. We’re calling on countries at COP 31 to develop roadmaps for rapidly replacing fossil fuels with clean energy. Quickly winding down fossil fuel subsidies and electrifying with renewables must be part of the plan.

2 Reforming COP:

In theory, COP rules requiring consensus from all 200 countries for decisions ensures everyone has a say. In practice, the rule enables a handful of petrostates to block progress for everyone. We need rules of procedure with an option for voting when consensus cannot be found and a conflict-of-interest policy to limit fossil fuel influence.

3 Protecting science:

Petrostates and fossil fuel interests are working to silence science that tells the truth about emissions and climate change. Countries should protect and promote science within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – the global treaty for coordinating the international response to climate change – as the basis for negotiations.
