Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2026) — Over the course of a week, The Climate Reality Project’s Global Week of Action, mobilized citizen support and action across six continents, 20 countries and 75 cities in support of the accelerated transition to clean, cheap energy. As the world grapples with a global energy crisis driving up prices across the board, thousands of advocates worldwide called on mayors and city leaders to protect their communities and constituents by reducing dependence on costly, volatile and dirty fossil fuels through electrification and the deployment of renewables. The effort secured commitments from 16 local leaders, ranging from a Yucatán state legislator pledging to advance rooftop solar reforms and a village leader in Sangli taking steps toward carbon neutrality, to a Nairobi government official promising to expand electric vehicles in the city's bus fleet.

Throughout the week, Climate Reality Leaders and volunteers around the world focused on two core actions: gathering signatures for a global petition calling on mayors worldwide to bring clean energy to the communities they serve and organizing petition deliveries to local government officials

Over 10,000 advocates stood up to demand a clean energy future for their communities, holding more than 75 in-person events, ranging from formal meetings with city officials to petition drops at government offices and taking thousands of online actions that collectively reached more than 250 government officials. "With energy costs rising and climate disasters intensifying, The Climate Reality Project's global network of advocates organized to deliver one clear message to their local leaders: The solutions exist. They are affordable. And the time to act is now,” said Phyllis Cuttino, President and CEO of The Climate Reality Project. “Our ability to effect change starts in communities and the elected leaders shaping local infrastructure and energy choices.  Clean energy is the best path forward for our planet and our pocketbooks.”

Local action remains a critical piece of the puzzle in a global transition away from fossil fuels. Energy generation accounted for 80% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide in 2023. Through direct outreach to their elected leaders, citizens around the world are taking power into their own hands to reduce emissions, lower energy costs, and build a more sustainable future.
