CHANG Sung Eun
CEO, YOLK
Sung Eun Chang majored in product design at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago. After gaining experience in New York and Italy, she returned to Korea and founded YOLK in August 2012. The company's goal was to innovate through the convergence of technology and design. Solar Paper, a paper-thin and lightweight solar charger, became the first Korean product to raise more than $1 million (KRW 1.2 billion) on Kickstarter, a US crowdfunding platform. More than 300 media outlets around the world, including CNBC and the BBC, took notice, and the company won the Minister of Industry Award and CES Innovation Award. YOLK's next challenge was to innovate beyond technology and design to pursue social value. YOLK is the first Korean company to win Germany's Green Award honors for its Solar Cow system, which tackles child labor in Africa through the distribution of solar energy; the “Tech for a Better World” innovation award at CES, the world's largest tech show; the Social Impact Award at IF, one of the world's top three design awards; and the first Korean partner project at P4G, the international summit on the environment. Recently, she launched AYANTU, an Ethiopian specialty coffee brand in partnership with SolarCow, where a cup of coffee can brighten the day and reduce carbon for an Ethiopian family.
