2019 Annual Report: Virginia Chapters

SHARE

Chapters across Virginia joined a broad coalition of grassroots partners to oppose the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and its proposed gas compressor station slated for construction in the historic African American community of Union Hill. As part of this effort, chapter activists helped organize events to shine a media spotlight on the devastating and disproportionate effect the pipeline would have on African American families, including a march in Richmond in May. Chapter activists didn’t stop there, working to raise awareness of the pipeline’s threat across the state and build a truly diverse coalition to win. The good news: It worked. The coalition’s efforts paid dividends in early January, when a unanimous ruling from three judges in the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals denied the permit for the compressor station, finding that the state did not consider issues of environmental justice adequately.
