Al Gore Honors Filmmaker Sybil Azur With Climate Reality’s Green Ring Award

Las Vegas, Nevada (June 14, 2022) – Yesterday, the founder and chair of The Climate Reality Project, former US Vice President Al Gore, presented the Alfredo Sirkis Memorial Green Ring Award to filmmaker and organizer Sybil Azur at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps Las Vegas Training. The training gathered climate advocates from around the Southwest and broader United States to provide attendees with the practical skills and knowledge to build an equitable and inclusive movement for climate action and climate justice in their communities.

The award honors Climate Reality Leaders who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their roles as climate communicators and activists. Trained at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2017, Sybil has worked tirelessly to build a movement for climate action, partnering with other environmental organizations and stakeholders to address climate justice in her community, the greater Los Angeles region, and beyond. Following the 2018 Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Los Angeles, Sybil co-led a monumental effort to commit the Los Angeles Unified School District to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy, including the district’s fleet of over 1,300 school buses. As the second-largest school district in the country, the LA Unified School District’s schools and facilities make it the largest consumer of electricity in Los Angeles.

“It is a pleasure to honor Sybil Azur with the Alfredo Sirkis Memorial Green Ring Award,” said Phyllis Cuttino, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project. “Since training in 2017, Sybil has been an exemplary Climate Reality Leader — spearheading a landmark commitment from the LA Unified School District to convert to 100% renewable energy and being a consistent voice for climate advocacy in her community.”

The Climate Reality Leadership Corps Las Vegas Training is the 49th Climate Reality Leadership Corps training and the organization’s first in-person training event in more than two years, following several successful virtual trainings. Participants learned directly from scientists, experts, Indigenous leaders, and grassroots organizers and came away from the training with proven strategies to effectively mobilize their communities in the fight for a just and sustainable future.

Upon completion of the training, participants join Climate Reality’s global network of activists around the world, including business leaders, elected officials, entrepreneurs, concerned citizens, educators, and students dedicated to bold, ambitious climate action.
