STATEMENT FROM KEN BERLIN, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE CLIMATE REALITY PROJECT, ON THE PROPOSED REPEAL OF THE CLEAN POWER PLAN

The Trump Administration announced its proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan, an EPA rule mandating power plants cut carbon emissions by 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. Ken Berlin, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project, released the following statement in response to the decision.

“The Trump Administration’s proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan is reckless and shortsighted. Even as devastating hurricanes have made the reality of the climate crisis so painfully clear, this administration continues to prioritize the interests of the fossil fuel industry over the American people’s right to clean air and a safe climate.

“Not only does the Clean Power Plan mandate that power plants cut the emissions polluting our air and driving climate change, it would also accelerate the country’s clean energy revolution, putting millions of Americans to work. But despite Administrator Pruitt and the Trump Administration’s efforts to move the country back into the last century, the American people and the forces of the free market have made it clear that clean energy is the future.

“The American people clearly cannot count on this administration to protect their basic human rights to clean air and a safe climate. But the good news is that cities, states, and businesses continue to step up to fill the void in leadership. The forces in favor of a clean energy economy are much stronger and longer-lasting than the Trump Administration, and despite this setback, a sustainable and just future is still in sight. It’s up to us to make it a reality.”
